I recall seeing from time to time watches that have alternative calendars on them as opposed to the distinct focus of the Gregorian calendar. Admittedly, such complications are niche directed only. For the vast majority of Jewish people, having a Hebrew calendar on their wrist would serve little to no purpose. The Jewish new year just ended. On the Jewish/Hebrew calendar scale the year is 5770. The Gregorian calendar that is the universal standard for the US and business all over the world has the year at 2009. There are other calendars out there too that I am not familiar with that have the date as something else still. I find this concept interesting. Think back to the turn of the century when such a big deal was made about the year 2000. It did feel like a big change, as though something special would happen. Then again, if you think about it from a logical standpoint, it is just an arbitrary number, as are most calendars. It all depends on when you start counting. Most calendars “began” counting based on some religious event. So many years later, we forget to an extent that the beginning dates of these calendar systems is so arbitrary. Still, they have lots of meaning for us both actual and symbolic.
The Hebraika watches are able to take into consideration the complex leap years and months with different lengths. The image you see of the rear of the watch has a year indicator – it is right over the gold rotor for the automatic movement. There are 40 years on the disc, and another 40 years are displayed on a second disc that supposedly came with the watches. 80 years later, you’ll have to get new discs made. Sorry! Did you notice that the crown on one of the watches is made to look like the Star of David? For me, these are just one more reason to be impressed with Alain Silberstein and his watches – from a design, creative, and technical standpoint.
Seen above are two models that take on the challenge. Both are part of the Alain Silberstein Hebraika collection. A very hard to find watch with extremely limited publicity around them. I believe the watches came out around 1994. The complications where developed together with watch maker Svend Andersen. You’d probably have to contact Alain Silberstein directly for more details. As you can see, the calendar read out is similar to Gregorian calendar in that it shows you the day and date. On the models those are written in Hebrew. The calendar is not that different really. It is based on the lunar, rather than solar calendar more than the Gregorian calendar. Weeks have seven days, but the months are a bit different in length (due to the lunar cycles). For that reason each month typically has 29-30 days. So there is sometimes an extra month to the year – on leap years. I believe the year is 354 days long.

More interesting are some other watches that Alain Silberstein is apparently at work on. We are talking about hybrid or multi calendar watches. These will be timepieces that have more than one calendar on them. Such as the Gregorian calendar and Hebrew calendar. One watches that is apparently due sometime in 2010 is a triple calendar watches (not that type of triple calendar), that had the Gregorian, Hebrew, and Chinese calendar all on one watch. Probably perpetual calendars at that. Wow! That will be some complex looking (and functioning) timepiece. I can’t wait.

This is actually a very telling tale, and is not at all unique to Maurice Lacroix. Look closely and you get to see exactly what it is like being a brand ambassador for a Swiss watch brand. Here you have outgoing British golfer Justin Rose being courted by Maruice Lacriox to becoming a brand ambassador them. This can mean, among other things, wearing only Maurice Lacroix watches in public, and wearing Maurice Larcroix branded clothing while playing golf. In exchange the brand ambassador gets money, and ideally some watches. In this video Mr. Rose gets at least one watch (the rest might be loaners). What is interesting about this video is that is really captures what occurs in reality. Mr. Rose is not a watch enthusiast by nature, but he does like watches – further he does not yet know a lot about the brand. Like all proud Swiss watch brands, Maurice Lacroix flies Justin to Switzerland (Zurich in this case) to meet their people, view the factory, and get the “treatment.” This is an important part of the process because it is necessary to have a true appreciation of what goes into a watch brand. Design is just a small part of it, the real seller is the manufacturing process that has the ability to make you swoon with glee over what goes into making a luxury watch.

You get to see the typical Swiss personality here. The friendly but a bit standoff-ish compared to the much more outgoing modern British demeanor. It is actually quite amusing as I have been in similar interactions myself. It is not that the Swiss are at all unfriendly, but rather that they just need to get to know you a bit before being more open and themselves. Mr. Rose gets to learn all about the brand, as be must be patient during the full “presentation.” What is interesting is that at this point the deal is made, but Mr. Rose still needs to be educated about what it means to be an ambassador. Part of that is a lot of images taken for marketing purposes. “Wear this watch…pose.” Is a statement he will hear many times. After a few days having a nice time in Switzerland Mr. Rose will leave with his new items and knowledge. He will likely be called back to regularly attend a few Maurice Lacroix events. It is a good deal for both parties really, and a big effort to be asked to be a brand ambassador for watch brands that are by nature notoriously picky. I think that TheTimeTV.com did a good job of capturing the real essence of the interactions and the feel of the situations (whether it was intentional or not). Good video.

The watch case is large at about 48-49mm wide. There is also a women’s version at 39mm wide – also not as thick as you’d think at 15mm. These are showy pieces, so it makes sense why they are bigger watches. Case material options will include steel, titanium or gold (yellow, rose, or white). Another camera style element is the ring around the dial. It is in enamel and meant to look like the ring around a camera lens. Pretty cool if you ask me. The rest of the watch case has some cool designs with those trendy horizontal lines and a robust crown guard. Like most Michael Bittel watches, each Eclipse is customizable to the buyer’s specific desires. I will likely get to check these out in January in Geneva when they are officially announced.

Anyhow, the Double Diaphragm Eclipse is pretty nifty, and you can tell how it is much like other Michael Bittel watches. He uses adjustable blinds on the dials to alter the images. This watch is similar in theme. Bittel says it has about three dials. This is true. Remember how I said it has a opening and closing shutter for the dial? Well it actually has two of them. Notice the gold and silver tone ones in the dial. You adjust one by moving the watch bezel, and likely the crown at 10 o’clock to adjust the other one. Underneath them, you see the manually-wound mechanical movement. On the partially decorated movement Michael Bittel will place diamonds (or perhaps other jewels) if you like. I’ve never see thing type of gem setting in watch movements before.
This watch doesn’t just have a dial that looks like a camera shutter, the prototype version actually used a camera shutter. Michael Bittel cannibalized a friend’s vintage camera (he had permission) and took out the shutter. He ground it down and modified it, and used it to make an opening and closing dial on a watch. This isn’t the first time that a shutter aperture style dial has graced my eyes, but it is one of the nicest renditions. I did mention the de Grisogono Fuso Quadrato Two Time Zone watch that applied a similar idea. Although on the Eclipse, the shutter opens up to reveal the decorated and diamond studded movement. Actually, I can’t figure out whether the watch is called the Eclipse, Double Eclipse, Double Diaphragm Eclipse, or some variation thereof. Who knows, it doesn’t matter. Not like there are other watches that look like this. By the way, I am gonna take this opportunity to mention to watch companies that you need to do two things: 1) make sure you give your watch a clear name, and don’t make the name extremely confusing. I don’t care if it is hard to choose a name, making a watch is harder. If you make a product, give it a name as good as the item is. 2) Just to remind yourself of that name (because they seem to forget), put that name ON THE WATCH. Yes, just engrave it anywhere. Maybe on the caseback, or on the side. Even placing it on the dial is a good idea. Remember that term branding? This is an important (and easy) part of branding.

Urwerk fans will likely welcome its addition to the collection, and it does feel different enough, while keep in line with the look and feel that Urwerk is going for.
On the wrist the UR-110 takes some getting used to. It doesn’t look like any watch case I’ve ever put on before. I jokingly described the design as a”mutated ninja star” (which apparently only makes sense in my head). Think of a modified Urwerk UR-103 watch case with wings. I guess that makes sense… torpedoes fly under water right? If you have a giant wrist the Torpedo will probably sit well, though for me the wings stick out like the watch is trying to gain altitude. The “coined edge” around the side of the organic looking case is nice, and the detailing is of course on par with a high-end timepiece.

Urwerk calls the movement their UR 9.01, and it is easily the high point of the watch. The movement is an automatic, and has those cool little “turbines” visible through the rear of the watch that spin when the rotor is spinning. Urwerk also points out that the turbines helps prevent shock damage to the rotor. Back on the dial you have the three satellites that have four hours on each of them. When moving around, they always point “forward” while moving. That is pretty cool, and when they move close to the minute scale, the correct hour on the cube spins around. Telling the time is easy, and the idea behind the placement of the minute scale is so that it is the first part of the watch you see when your arm peeks out from under a sleeve.
When Martin and Felix of Urwerk wanted to create something new – they had to sit down for a while and think about what they had done before, and what they could follow up with that was unique in the watch world. Doing that is really tough. Even the satellite time telling system that Urwerk is known for isn’t unique to them, originating a long time ago elsewhere. Urwerk just sort of adopted the satellite system of telling the time and made it their own. The Torpedo – as the UR-110 is also called – does two things differently. It modifies the satellite system a bit offering a fun new visual spectacle, and put it in a case that is novel, as well as weird.
Dimensions for the case are an awkward 47mm wide by 51mm tall, and 16mm thick – but that all ranges given that the case curves around a lot. While it looks like it is sitting on your wrist as opposed to around it, the watch doesn’t feel like it is going to slide all over the place as the bottom is mostly flat. As I said a few times, the titanium case looks a bit bare and “unfinished.” Some people might like that look, but I am waiting for the black colored case that is coming out soon. I anticipate that model to frame the design of the watch much better. Naked titanium is not always easy to pull off. I also think that if the wings were angled down to sort of wrap around a wrist, it would make the design of the watch much more manageable.
The dial also has a subsidiary seconds dial, a “oil change” indicator, and a day/night indicator. The oil change indicator is a sort of service guide that advises you when to send your watch back to Urwerk for a (pricey) service. It is an homage to such indicators on cars. Future variations on the UR-110 are likely to have alternative complications. I feel as though the dial is a bit incomplete. While it is clean, the sandblasted surface under the satellite system for the hours feels a bit bare. Like I keep saying, the Torpedo is pretty nice all around, but it looks like Urwerk could put just a bit more time into polishing the design – which they likely will.
Detailing on the dial is however really nice. Urwerk always impresses me with how crisp their parts look – and the Torpedo dial and mechanics is no exception. Operating the movement is cool as well. The crown has a sort of lid over it that you just gently pull up a bit to allow it to adjust the time. The crown is placed at the top of the watch. You can see it better from the bottom of the 110. In fact – and this the case with a few Urwerk watches – I might like the caseback of the watch more than the dial! That element of the watch is pretty handsome.
